PART 1

Hello Mihriban, can you introduce yourself?

Hello, well, my name is Mihriban Menteş. I am 21 years old. I was born in Dörtyol in Hatay. Currently, I am staying in Şişli, İstanbul. Recently, I earned a bachelor’s degree in art history. And then I started preparing for IELTS exam for my Master Degree.

Is your hometown a big city or a small town?

My hometown, Dörtyol, is not a big city. It is a small town with all natural beauties I can say. Therefore almost all people know each other and our neighbours are like our family. Everybody tries to help each other.

Please describe your hometown a little.

My hometown is a small town where you can see the amazing views of mother nature, when you can see the mountains and the sea together. The weather is always warm even in winter, it rains heavily but never snows there. Summers are very hot, you can tell that it is like desert heat. And my hometown is famous for citrus trees, the municipality holds an orange festival every December.

How long have you been living there?

I don’t live there anymore. I just visit my family for holidays and religious festivals. But I have lived for 18 years until I got into university.

PART 2

Describe a time when someone took a nice photograph of you.

  • when it was taken
  • who took it
  • what was happening
  • why you like the photo

I’d like to depict the photograph of me which I always like. It was taken about 8 years ago. I remember that year very well because it was the year before I got married. It was taken during my engagement ceremony. My uncle Ekrem took the photo while I was hugging my grandfather. I didn’t know it had been taken until he sent me it a few weeks later. That’s very typical of him. He likes taking photos and his photographs are full of surprises.

The photo was taken in summer during the engagement ceremony. It was one of the hottest summers I think and the temperature rose to a scorching 40 degrees. Almost all the family members, nearly 50 people came together in my father’s home for our engagement ceremony. It isn’t often that my family all meet up together so this was a really special occasion.

At the time the photo was taken, I was hugging my grandfather and we were laughing and enjoying each other’s company. That was the last time I saw him. He passed away later that summer. That conversation has stayed with me and will continue to stay with me all my life. I keep this photo as a wallpaper on my computer. Whenever I look at it, it brings me a feeling of calmness and love.

PART 3

How has modern technology changed the way we take photographs?

More photographs are being taken nowadays than at any other time in the history of photography. There are more opportunities to take the photo, process it and show it than ever before. Paper prints are still important, but photos are usually kept in computer folders, memory cards and phones. They are also being uploaded onto social network sites.

How has sharing photographs changed since your grandparents’ time?

In the old days, my grandparents used to have paper prints and it was black and white. They used to put the photograph into a lovely frame and put it on the wall. Thus whomever used to visit them, saw the photo. But nowadays, people use social media. They upload their photographs onto social networking sites and show their photos to the world.

Do you think that people nowadays spend too much time taking photographs?

Definitely yes, in my opinion people spend too much time taking photos as it is so easy and cheap to take photos today. I think it’s also because of social media effect. Most people take and share multiple selfies in a day.
