PART 1
Hi and welcome! Can you please introduce yourself and tell us who you are?
Hello, thank you. I’m Mihriban Menteş. I’m 25 years old. I live in Istanbul. I like painting pictures and watching movies.
Do you work or are you a student?
I’m currently a student at Anadolu University. I’m studying Photography and Camera Operation.
Is that a popular subject in your country?
I’m not sure but I think there’s a tendency nowadays. Photography and videography is getting popular day by day thanks to social media.
What are the most popular subjects in Turkey?
As far as I know Law and Medicine are the two most popular subjects among students who take university entrance exam.
PART 2
You will have to talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes. You have one minute to think about what you’re going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
What is the most interesting building in your country? Where is it located? What is it used for? Explain why you think it is the most interesting? |
In my opinion, Galata Tower is the most interesting building in my country. It is located in Galata. You can reach easily by following İstiklal Street from Taksim Square to Karaköy. It was built in 1340s and Ottomans used it as an observation tower to spot fires.
The interesting part is its story. Hezarfen Ahmed Çelebi was a legendary Ottoman aviator. According to the legend, He flew from the very top of the building using eagle wings and landed in Uskudar with the help of the wind. As a result, he was the first flying man in history. Furthermore by flying from Karaköy to Üsküdar, we can say he flew from Europe to Asia.
PART 3
1) Are there some old buildings in your hometown? Where and Describe it?
Yeah, I’m from Hatay. And Hatay is a cosmopolitan city with different amazing cultures. So, I can name a few old buildings. Church of St. Peter is composed of a cave carved into the mountainside. It is one of Christianity’s oldest churches. Also some people believe that this cave was used by the very first Christians.
Another building is Habibi Neccar Mosque. It is the oldest mosque within the borders of Turkey.
2) Compare the differences between the old buildings and the modern ones?
Generally speaking, the traditional buildings are made of solid stone. And each of them seems unique. Their architecture reflect their era and culture. Today, buildings are not built to last as long and they all look the same.
3) What are people’s attitudes to old buildings today and that of our later generation? Should we protect them? Why?
People, including my generation, advocate that governments should protect old buildings. Because old buildings both have the great artistic value and they keep history alive.
