Phrasal verbs, Türkçe anlamıyla öbeksi fiiler, bir fiil ve bir edatın yan yana gelmesiyle oluşur. Fiilin yanına gelen edat, kimi zaman fiilin anlamına yakın bir manaya gelebilirken kimi zaman ise fiilin anlamını tamamen değiştirir. Bu sebeple yanındaki edatı ve fiili bilmemize rağmen phrasal verb’lerin anlamını doğru tahmin edemeyebiliriz. Dolayısıyla bu fiilleri, ya ezberleyerek ya da çokça örnek cümlenin içinde görerek öğrenebiliriz. Söz konusu YDS, YÖKDİL olduğunda tek bir doğrumuz bile büyük önem taşır. Bu yüzden YDS YÖKDİL gibi sınavlardan bu soruları kaçırmamanız için YDS Phrasal Verbs yazısını hazırladık. Bu konu başlığı altında sizlere sıkça çıkan öbeksi fiilleri örnek cümlelerle sunacağız.

Bildiğiniz gibi YDS’de ilk 6 soru, kelime bilginizi ölçer. Bu 6 sorudan 2’si ise Phrasal Verbs konusundan gelir. Bu sebeple yazıda vereceğimiz phrasal verb’lere ve örnek cümlelerimize sınavdan önce bakmanız yararınıza olacaktır. YDS PHRASAL VERBS

  • add up: to add; toplamak
    Example: Add up all the money I owe you.
  • back up: to support; desteklemek
    Example: The writer doesn’t back up his opinions with examples.
  • back up: to move backwards; geri çekmek
    Example: Can you back your car up so that I can get through?
  • bear out: to support; to confirm; desteklemek, teyit etmek
    Example: The other witnesses will bear out what I say.
  • become of: to happen to; to be the end of; olmak, başına gelmek
    Example: Whatever became of that parcel you sent?
  • believe in: to have trust or confidence in; to feel certain that somebody/something exists; güvenmek, inanmak
    Example: They need a leader they can believe in.
  • black out: to become unconscious for a short time; to faint; to pass out; bayılmak
    Example: The driver had probably blacked out at the wheel.
  • blow out: if a flame; etc. blows out; it is put out by the wind, etc.; sönmek
    Example: Somebody opened the door and the candle blew out.
  • blow out: to burst; patlamak
    Example: See, dynamite blows out in all directions but nitro shoots straight out.
  • blow up: to explode; to be destroyed by an explosion; patlamak
    Example: The bomb blew up.
  • blow up: to get angry with somebody; öfkeyle patlamak
    Example: I’m sorry I blew up at you.
  • break away: to free oneself from restraint; kaçmak
    Example: The prisoner broke away from his guards.
  • break down: to stop working; to fail to function; bozulmak
    Example: The telephone system has broken down.
  • break in: to enter a building by force; zorla içeri girmek
    Example: Burglars had broken in while we were away.
  • break in: to interrupt something; kesmek
    Example: She longed to break in on their conversation but didn’t want to appear rude.
  • break into: to enter a building by force; to open a car, etc. by force; zorla bir binaya, arabaya vs. girmek
    Example: We had our car broken into last week.
  • break off: to stop; to split away; to terminate before the expected time; durdurmak; parçalanmak; parçalamak; kesmek
    Example: The back section of the plane had broken off.
  • break out: (of war, fighting or other unpleasant events) to start suddenly; patlak vermek
    Example: They had escaped to America shortly before war broke out in 1939.
  • break through: to succeed in dealing with an attitude that somebody has and the difficulties it creates; engeli geçmek; aşmak
    Example: He had finally managed to break through her reserve.
  • break up: to end a relationship with somebody; ayrılmak
    Example: She’s just broken up with her boyfriend.
  • bring about: to make something happen; to cause; sebep olmak
    Example: What brought about the change in his attitude?
  • bring back: to return; to cause to remember; geri getirmek; hatırlatmak
    Example: The photographs brought back many pleasant memories.
  • bring in: to ask someone to do a particular job; to introduce; işe almak; tanıtmak; sunmak
    Example: We need to bring in an expert to deal with this problem.
  • bring up: to raise; to take care for a child; to mention; söz konusu etmek; çocuk yetiştirmek
    Example: She brought up five children.
  • bump into: to meet by chance; rastlamak
    Example: I bumped into Simon this morning.
  • call at: to stop at a place for a short time; kısa bir ziyarette bulunmak; uğramak
    Example: This train calls at Didcot and Reading.
  • call down: to reprimand; to scold; azarlamak
    Example: I was called down by my supervisor for not catching the accounting error sooner.
  • call for: to need; to demand; to require; gerektirmek / ask for, istemek
    Example: The situation calls for prompt action.
  • call in: to phone a place, especially the place where you work; to ask for the services of somebody; (yardım) çağırmak
    Example: Several people have called in sick today.
  • call off: to cancel; to stop; to bring and end to; son vermek
    Example: The game was called off because of bad weather.
  • call on: to ask or demand that somebody do something; çağrıda bulunmak
    Example: She called on the government to hold a vote.
  • call out: to ask somebody to come, especially to an emergency; çağırmak; yardımını istemek
    Example: The lifeboat was called out yesterday.
  • call up: to telephone; to ring up; telefon etmek
    Example: Nancy had called up to invite him.
  • care for: to nurse; to look after somebody who is sick, very old, very young, etc.; bakmak
    Example: She moved back home to care for her elderly parents.
  • carry off: ​to win something; kazanmak
    Example: He carried off most of the prizes.
  • carry on: to go on; to continue; devam etmek; sürdürmek
    Example: Carry on with your work while I’m away.
  • carry out: to execute; to fulfill; to accomplish; to attain; başarmak; tamamlamak
    Example: Our soldiers carried out a successful attack last night.
  • catch up with: to reach; to come abreast of; yetişmek
    Example: I ran after her and managed to catch up with her.
  • check in: to go to a desk in a hotel, an airport, etc. and tell an official there that you have arrived; to arrive and register; kaydını yaptırmak
    Example: Please check in at least an hour before departure.
  • check off: to put a mark an item on a list; işaretlemek
    Example: Check the names off as the guests arrive.
  • check out: to pay your bill and leave a hotel, etc.; hesabı ödeyip ayrılmak
    Example: I’m sorry, they aren’t here. They checked out this morning.
  • cheer up: to become more cheerful; to make somebody/something more cheerful; neşelendirmek
    Example: Talking to Jane cheered me up a lot.
  • clear up: to solve or explain something; açıklamak
    Example: I hope this explanation clears up any confusion.
  • come about: to happen; to occur; olmak; meydana gelmek
    Example: Can you tell me how the accident came about?
  • come across: to meet or find somebody/something by chance; rastlamak
    Example: She came across some old photographs in a drawer.
  • come along: to arrive; to appear; (fırsat) çıkmak
    Example: When the right opportunity comes along, she’ll take it.
  • come around: to change your mood or your opinion; fikir değiştirmek; kendi görüşünden caymak
    Example: He’ll never come around to my way of thinking.
  • come by: to receive; to manage to get something; to obtain; to acquire; elde etmek
    Example: Jobs are hard to come by these days.
  • come down with: to get an illness that is not very serious; hastalanmak
    Example: I think I’m coming down with flu.
  • come out: to appear; to open; ortaya çıkmak; gözükmek; (güneş) yüzünü göstermek
    Example: The rain stopped and the sun came out.
  • come into: to be left money by somebody who has died; mirasa konmak
    Example: She came into a fortune when her uncle died.
  • come through: to be successful; to last successfully to the end; kazanmak; başarmak
    Example: We were worried she wouldn’t be able to handle it, but she came through in the end.
  • come up: to appear; to arise; ortaya çıkmak
    Example: The daffodils are just beginning to come up.
  • come up with: to find; to suggest; to offer; bulmak (fikir vb.); önermek
    Example: She came up with a new idea for increasing sales.
  • count on: to trust; to rely on; güvenmek
    Example: I’m counting on you to help me.
  • cut down: to reduce; to lessen; azaltmak
    Example: I won’t have a coffee thanks—I’m trying to cut down (= drink less coffee).
  • cut off: to stop; to interrupt; kesmek; kapatmaka; durdurmak
    Example: We were cut off in the middle of our conversation.
  • cut out: to make something by cutting; to eliminate; kesip çıkarmak
    Example: She cut the dress out of some old material.
  • die down: to become gradually less; to diminish; to subside; azalmak
    Example: When the applause had died down, she began her speech.
  • die out: to stop existing; to become extinct; to disappear; ortadan kaybolmak; soyu tükenmek
    Example: This species has nearly died out because its habitat is being destroyed.
  • do away with: to make something end; to abolish; to get rid of; to destroy; to eliminate; to dispose of; ortadan kaldırmak
    Example: He thinks it’s time we did away with the monarchy.
  • do over: to do something again; to repeat; tekrarlamak
    Example: She insisted that everything be done over.
  • do without: to manage without somebody/something; -sız idare etmek
    Example: She can’t do without a secretary.
  • doze off: to go to sleep, especially during the day; uyuklamak
    Example: The office was so hot I nearly dozed off at my desk.
  • drop in: to pay an informal visit to a person or a place; kısa bir ziyaret için uğramak
    Example: I thought I’d drop in on you while I was passing.
  • drop off: ​to fall into a light sleep; uykuya dalmak
    Example: I dropped off and missed the end of the film.
  • drop out (of): to no longer take part in or be part of something; to leave school, college, etc. without finishing your studies; terketmek; (okulu) bırakmak
    Example: She started a degree but dropped out after only a year.
  • engage someone in: to make busy; to make occupied; meşgul olmak / etmek
    Example: She tried desperately to engage him in conversation.
  • face with: to encounter; to meet; to confront; yüz yüze gelmek; karşı karşıya kalmak
    Example: My meditation practice definitely helps me whenever I’m faced with a stressful situation at work.
  • fall behind (in, with): to fail to do something fast enough or on time; gerisinde kalmak; zamanında yapamamak
    Example: He was ill for six weeks and fell behind with his schoolwork.
  • fall in with: to agree to something; to coincide by chance; to happen to meet; denk düşmek; kabul etmek
    Example: He ended up falling in with a crowd of musicians and actors.
  • figure out: to understand; to interpret; anlamak
    Example: I’m trying to figure out a way to make this work.
  • feel like: to desire; to want; canı istemek
    Example: He was so rude, I felt like leaving immediately.
  • fill out: to complete a form, etc. by writing information on it; doldurmak
    Example: To order, fill out the coupon on p 54.
  • find out: to discover; to get some information by investigation; bulmak; keşfetmek
    Example: Visit our website to find out more.
  • get about: to go to a lot of different places; to move or walk; dolaşmak; yayılmak
    Example: Stuart really gets about—last week he was in Dubai and this week he’s in Paris.
  • get across: to be communicated or understood; açıklamak
    Example: He’s not very good at getting his ideas across.
  • get ahead: to make progress; to advance; to prosper; to succeed; ilerlemek; gelişmek
    Example: She wants to get ahead in her career.
  • get along / on (with): to have a friendly relationship with somebody; geçinmek
    Example: I don’t really get along with my sister’s husband.
  • get around: to travel; to move about; to circulate; dolaşmak
    Example: News soon got around that he had resigned.
  • get at: to reach; ulaşmak
    Example: The files are locked up and I can’t get at them.
  • get away: to escape; to leave; to be free to leave; kaçmak; terketmek
    Example: I won’t be able to get away from the office before 7.
  • get behind: to fall behind; as in a timetable; geri kalmak
    Example: The agency had gotten behind with its work and needed outside help.
  • get by: to manage to live or do a particular thing using the money, knowledge, equipment, etc. that you have; zorluklara rağmen başarmak
    Example: How does she get by on such a small salary?
  • get into: to start being involved in an activity; to become engaged in; to enter (a car, etc.); binmek; başlamak
    Example: She’s been getting into yoga recently – she does three classes a week.
  • get on: to continue doing something; ilerlemek
    Example: I’ll leave you to get on then, shall I?
  • get out of: to stop having a particular habit; kaçınmak
    Example: I can’t get out of the habit of waking at six in the morning.
  • get over: to recover dorm an illness; iyileşmek
    Example: She’s just getting over the flu.
  • get through: ​to manage to do or complete something; to finish a piece of work successfully; başarıyla bitirmek
    Example: Let’s start—there’s a lot to get through.
  • give off: to produce something such as a smell, heat, light, etc.; to release; çıkarmak
    Example: The flowers gave off a fragrant perfume.
  • give up: ​to stop trying to do something; to stop (a bad habit); to abandon; to relinquish; bırakmak
    Example: She didn’t give up work when she had the baby.
  • go about: ​to start working on something; to proceed with; başlamak
    Example: You’re not going about the job in the right way.
  • go into: to examine something carefully; to consider; to discuss (in detail); incelemek
    Example: We need to go into the question of costs.
  • go off: to be fired; to explode; patlamak
    Example: The bomb went off in a crowded street.
  • go on (with): to continue an activity, especially after a break; sürmek; devam etmek
    Example: We’ll go on with the presentations after lunch.
  • go over: to check; to review; gözden geçirmek
    Example: Go over your work before you hand it in.
  • grow up: (of a person) to develop into an adult; to mature; büyümek; yetişmek
    Example: Their children have all grown up and left home now.
  • hand in: to give something to a person in authority; to submit; (ödev, rapor) teslim etmek
    Example: You must all hand in your projects by the end of next week.
  • hand out: to give something to each person in a group or place; to distribute publicly; dağıtmak
    Example: The teacher asked her to hand out the worksheets.
  • hang up: to replace a telephone receiver on its hook; (telefonu) kapatmak
    Example: After I hung up I remembered what I’d wanted to say.
  • hit on: to think of a good idea suddenly or by chance; tesadüfen bulmak
    Example: She hit on the perfect title for her new novel.
  • hold on: to wait; to stop; beklemek
    Example: Hold on! This isn’t the right road.
  • hold up: to steal from a bank, shop, etc. using a gun; to rob; soymak
    Example: Masked men held up a security van in South London yesterday.
  • keep an eye on: to keep someone out of trouble; to take care of; to guard; korumak
    Example: Keep an eye on your brother while I’m out, please.
  • keep on: to continue; to persist in; sürdürmek
    Example: The rain kept on all night.
  • keep out: to not enter a place; to stay outside; içeri sokmamak
    Example: The sign said ‘Private Property—Keep Out!’
  • keep up: to maintain; to preserve; sürdürmek
    Example: Do you still keep up your Spanish?
  • keep up with: to do something or move at an acceptable rate, or at the same rate as someone or something else; ayak uydurmak; hızına yetişmek
    Example: It’s a fast pace, and you’ll have to work hard to keep up with.
  • knock out: to make somebody go to sleep or become unconscious; nakavt etmek
    Example: He hit me and nearly knocked me out.
  • lead someone on: to deceive; to mislead; kandırmak
    Example: All that time she’d been leading him on (= pretending she liked him), but she was only interested in his money.
  • leave out: to not include; to omit; hariç tutmak; dahil etmemek
    Example: Leave me out of this quarrel, please.
  • let down: to fail to help or support somebody as they had hoped or expected; hayal kırıklığına uğratmak
    Example: You will be there tomorrow – you won’t let me down, will you?
  • look after: to take care of; bakmak
    Example: Who’s going to look after the children while you’re away?
  • look down upon: to scorn; hor görmek
    Example: The well-dressed businessman looked down upon the kid wearing a T-shirt in the elevator, not knowing that he was the new CEO.
  • look for: to seek for; aramak
    Example: He left his home to look for employment.
  • look forward to: to feel pleased and excited about something that is going to happen; dört gözle beklemek
    Example: She was looking forward to seeing the grandchildren again.
  • look into: to examine; to investigate; to inquire; araştırmak
    Example: If you really look into it, you’ll probably find it’s not such a good deal.
  • look on: to watch; to observe; bakmak
    Example: Passers-by simply looked on as he was attacked.
  • look out (for): to take care of; to watch for; dikkat etmek; göz etmek; kollamak
    Example: Look out for Anna while you’re there.
  • look over: to quickly examine; to inspect; incelemek
    Example: Would you quickly look over these figures for me and see if there are any obvious mistakes?
  • look up: to look for information in a dictionary; to search for; aramak
    Example: I looked it up in the dictionary.
  • make out: to manage to see; to distinguish; görmek; çıkarmak
    Example: I could just make out a figure in the darkness.
  • make up: to invent a story, etc., especially in order to trick or entertain somebody; uydurmak
    Example: He made up some excuse about his daughter being sick.
  • make up: to prepare a bed for use; to create a temporary bed; yatak yapmak
    Example: They made up a bed for me on the sofa.
  • make up: to form something; to compose; to constitute; oluşturmak
    Example: Women make up 56 per cent of the student numbers.
  • make up: to end an argument with somebody and become friends again; barışmak
    Example: Why don’t you two kiss and make up?
  • make up for: to compensate for; telafi etmek
    Example: After all the delays, we were anxious to make up for lost time.
  • mix up: to confuse; şaşırtmak
    Example: I think you must be mixing me up with someone else.
  • pass away: to die; to stop existing; vefat etmek; sona ermek
    Example: His mother passed away last year.
  • pay off: to pay all of the one owes; bütün borcunu ödemek
    Example: The gamble paid off.
  • pick up: to collect; almak (bir yere gelip/gidip birini)
    Example: I’ll pick you up at five.
  • pick out: to select; seçmek
    Example: He picked out the ripest peach for me.
  • point out: to mention; to explain; to indicate; açıklamak
    Example: He pointed out the dangers of driving alone.
  • pull in / out: to arrive / to depart (of a vehicle); yola çıkmak; varmak
    Example: There were a couple of men standing there by the door, waiting for the train to pull in and stop.
  • put across: to communicate your ideas, feelings, etc. successfully to somebody; kabul ettirmek (fikrini); anlatmak
    Example: She’s not very good at putting her views across.
  • run away: to leave somebody/a place suddenly; to escape from somebody/a place; kaçmak
    Example: He ran away from home at the age of thirteen.
  • run into / across: to meet by chance; tesadüfen karşılaşmak
    Example: I ran across several old friends when I went back to my hometown.
  • run into: to crash into somebody/something; çarpmak
    Example: The bus went out of control and ran into a line of people.
  • run out: to expire; to finish; to use up; tüketmek
    Example: We ran out of fuel.
  • run over: to overflow; taşmak
    Example: The water/The bath is running over – quick, turn the taps off.
  • run over: to drive over accidentally (in a vehicle); to knock down and pass over; araç ile çiğnemek; exmek (arabayla)
    Example: Two children were run over and killed.
  • run up: to allow a bill, debt, etc. to reach a large total; to accumulate; borç artırmak
    Example: How had he managed to run up so many debts?
  • see (someone) off: to watch someone leave on a trip; uğurlamak
    Example: My parents saw me off at the airport.
  • send for: to ask someone to come to see you; getirtmek; çağırtmak
    Example: Do you think we should send for a doctor?
  • set out: to leave a place and begin a journey; yola çıkmak
    Example: They set out on the last stage of their journey.
  • set up: to start a new business; to establish; to form; oluşturmak
    Example: After leaving college, he set himself up as a freelance photographer.
  • settle down: to become or make somebody become calm, less excited, etc.; sakinleşmek
    Example: It always takes the class a while to settle down at the start of the lesson.
  • settle down: to become familiar with a place and to feel happy and confident in it; yerleşmek
    Example: Have you settled down in your new house yet?
  • show off: to boast by words or actions; gösteriş yapmak
    Example: She only bought that sports car to show off and prove she could afford one.
  • show up: to arrive; to appear; ortaya çıkmak
    Example: It was getting late when she finally showed up.
  • speak for: to express the opinions or wishes of someone; adına konuşmak; yerine konuşmak
    Example: Our party speaks for the poor and unemployed.
  • stand for: to support or represent something; temsil etmek
    Example: I hated the organization and all it stood for (= the ideas that it supported).
  • stand out: to be very noticeable; to be prominent; fark edilmek
    Example: The black lettering really stands out on that orange background.
  • stand up for: to support or defend; to talk in favour of; desteklemek; savunmak
    Example: You must stand up for your rights.
  • take after: to look like; to resemble; benzemek; çekmek
    Example: Your daughter doesn’t take after you at all.
  • take back: to return; to admit that something you said was wrong; geri vermek; sözünü geri almak
    Example: All right, I take it all back. It wasn’t your fault.
  • take down: to write down; not etmek; yazmak
    Example: Reporters took down every word of his speech.
  • take in: to deceive; to cheat; kandırmak
    Example: Don’t be taken in by his charm—he’s ruthless.
  • take into account: to consider or remember something when judging a situation; dikkate almak
    Example: A good architect takes into account the building’s surroundings.
  • take off: (of an aircraft, etc.) to leave the ground and begin to fly; to remove sth especially a piece of clothing; havalanmak; çıkarmak (elbise)
    Example: The plane took off an hour late.
  • take on: to employ somebody; işe almak
    Example: She was taken on as a trainee.
  • take up: to start a hobby; to fill or use an amount of space or time; zaman / yer kaplamak; hobiye başlamak
    Example: The table takes up too much room.
  • tear up: to rip apart; to tear into pieces; parçalamak
    Example: She tore up all the letters he had sent her.
  • think up: to create something in your mind; to devise; to invent; yaratmak; bulmak
    Example: Can’t you think up a better excuse than that?
  • try on: to put on a piece of clothing to discover if it fits you or if you like it; elbise denemek
    Example: Try the shoes on before you buy them.
  • try out: to test; to check the function of; denemek
    Example: They’re trying out a new presenter for the show.
  • turn down: to reject; to refuse; reddetmek
    Example: He asked her to marry him but she turned him down.
  • turn into: to become; to change into; dönüşmek
    Example: Our dream holiday turned into a nightmare.
  • turn on: to start the flow of electricity, gas, water, etc. by moving a switch, button; açmak
    Example: I’ll turn the television on.
  • turn off: to stop the flow of electricity, gas, water, etc. by moving a switch, button; kapamak
    Example: They’ve turned off the water while they repair a burst pipe.
  • turn out: to end; to result; to eventuate; olduğu ortaya çıkmak; sonuçlanmak
    Example: She thought she was pregnant, but it turned out to be a false alarm.
  • turn up: to arrive; to increase the sound, heat, etc. of a piece of equipment; varmak; sesini açmak
    Example: We arranged to meet at 7.30, but she never turned up.
  • turn down: to reject; to refuse; to reduce the noise, heat, etc. produced by a piece of equipment by moving its controls; reddetmek; kısmak
    Example: Why did she turn down your invitation? / Please turn the volume down.
  • watch out: used to warn somebody about something dangerous; dikkatli olmak
    Example: Watch out! There’s a car coming!
  • wear off: to gradually disappear or stop; to fade; eskimek; azalmak
    Example: The effects of the drug will soon wear off.
  • wear out: to make yourself/somebody feel very tired; yormak
    Example: You’ll wear yourself out if you carry on working so hard.
  • work out: to exercise; to calculate; to understand; antrenman yapmak; hesaplamak; anlamak
    Example: I couldn’t work out where the music was coming from.
  • wipe out: to destroy; to remove; yok etmek
    Example: Whole villages were wiped out by the earthquake.
