YDS- Noun Clauses

YDS’de karşınıza çıkabilecek dil bilgisi konularını anlattığımız yazı serimizde bu defa Noun Clauses konusunu işleyeceğiz. Noun Clauses konusunu daha önce Noun Clause Konu Anlatımı yazımızda ele almıştık. Bu defa aynı konuyu temel hatlarıyla bildiğinizi varsaydık. Ve Noun Clause konusunu YDS’de bilmeniz gereken kurallara uygun olarak sizlere aktaracağız. Bu sebeple de başlığı YDS Noun Clauses şeklinde atmayı uygun bulduk. Hazırsanız konumuza yakından bakalım!

Noun Clauses

İsim yan cümlecikleri, cümle içinde aynı tek kelimelik isimler gibi özne, nesne, sıfat tamlamalarında tamlanan ve ilgeçlerin nesnesi görevinde bulunurlar. Aşağıdaki kelimeler isim yan cümlelerinin başında bağlaç olarak kullanılır.

a) Özne durumunda bulunan isim yan cümlecikleri (Noun Clause as a subject of a sentence)

• What the speaker claimed surprised everybody.
• Where he has been so long is still unknown.
• Who she is dating is none of my business.
• How they survived the accident is unbelievable.
• Why they left the country is a secret.

b) Nesne durumundaki isim yan cümlecikleri (Noun Clause as an object of a sentence)

• I didn’t understand why she looked at me angrily.
• Nobody believed what he told about you yesterday.
• I wonder where he spent the night.
• I couldn’t hear what the lecturer was saying.
• Does anybody know who invented the dishwasher?
• Do you. know when the train is going to depart?

c) Sıfat tamlamalarında tamlanan görevi yapan isim yan cümlecikleri (Noun Clause as Adjective Component)

Bu cümleciklerin başında yer alan “that” cümleden atılabilir.

• I’m sure (that) you will win the race.
• We weren’t convinced (that) he was innocent.
• Everybody is certain (that) Paul cheats on every exam.
• I’m pleased (that) you have been employed here.

d) İlgeçlerin nesnesi olan isim yan cümleleri (Noun Clause as an object of the preposition)

• We were worried about how serious his injury was.
• I’m not really interested in what he is saying.
• Everybody believes in whatever she says.
• He never thinks about how he will pay his debts.
• They were looking at what the children were doing.

Dikkat!

“that” ile başlayan isim yan cümleciği nesne durumunda olursa “that” cümleden çıkarılabilir, özne durumunda ise çıkarılamaz.

• I could not believe (that) she had lied to us.
• Nobody is aware (that) the boy has many abilities.
• That she told us the truth made us happy.
• That Stephen failed the exam did not surprise me.

“that” ile başlayan cümleler daha çok formal kullanım olup günlük İngilizcede bunun yerine öznesi “it” olan cümleler tercih edilir. Bu cümlelerde isim yan cümleciği cümlenin sonundadır ve kendisinden önece bir isim, zamir veya sıfat gelebilir.

• That the world is undergoing a climate change is a fact. / It’s a fact that the world is undergoing a climate change.
• That the crime rate has increased rapidly is true. / It’s true that the crime rate has increased rapidly.

Bir yes/no sorusu isim yan cümleciğine dönüşürse, cümleciğin başına “if” ya da “whether” getirilir, bunlardan sonra “or not” da gelebilir.

Soru kelimelerinden sonra fiilin mastar hali (infinitive) getirildiğinde should / can / could anlamı taşır.

• I don’t know what I should do. → I don’t know what to do.
• We couldn’t decide where we could go. → We couldn’t decide where to go.
• Tell me how I can operate this machine. → Tell me how to operate this machine.
• Can you explain how I can solve this kind of problems? → Can you explain how to solve this kind of problems.
